BitchX - changing parts of submask

Ok, so I've got BitchX up and running no problem, but I'd like to change part of the submask. Right now I get something like this:

user@ip

I realize that changing the second part is more difficult, but how do I change the first (user) part in BitchX. I skimmed through the various commands but didn't find anything that worked. I also tried putting the variables in ~/.profile and ~/.bash_profile as it suggests in the man pages, but I had no success getting anything from there to stick.

If possible, I'd also like to know how to change this for KSirc, even though it seems to have less in the way of features.

I know how to change my nick, that wasn't what I was asking. I did find the solution though, it turns out you have to relogin to bash after fiddling with the config files for the variables to stick.
