Red face BitchX and proxy

Hi, I'm new in the forum. I would really appreciate some guidance.

I'm using the terminal IRC client BitchX and I'm trying to use a proxy with it.
Searching online directed me here and to another post that told me how to set the host and port but not the user and password for the proxy.
I of course get an auth error.

if anyone knows how to set this up please let me know. Thank you.

With a proxy, what ports does the proxy allow?

From memory (a dangerous thing) browsing is done on port 80 or 8080, but IRC is done on 665-667.

Can you go around the proxy?

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean.

I'm not trying to circumvent a proxy, I'm trying to configure the proxy settings of BitchX. IRC is inherently insecure and will show my real IP wherever I connect. Obviously I don't want that but I don't want to set a system wide proxy just to use this application.

I cant find documentation about it http://www.tc.umn.edu/~hick0088/files/BitchX.txt

all I know is to set the socks hosts and port but cant find info about what variables to set for login in any documentation.

this is all I got
SET SOCKS_HOST
SET SOCKS_PORT

maybe it's just not possible...

if anyone knows about another terminal irc client where setting up a proxy is more straight forward please let me know, I'd appreciate that.

thanks.
