bitching about BitchX

Hey guys,

This looks like an interesting irc client but it has some really annoying "features." I see you can stop it from autoconnecting to whatever server it likes by using -N on startup. But if you disconnect from a server after BitchX is running it starts going down the list and trying to connect with every server in the list.

How can I get it NEVER to connect to a server unless I issue a server command?

Where is the list of servers coming from? I see a list called ircii.servers but this does not look like the list I get in BitchX.

Any other pointers to useful doc for this?

Thanks,
Rand

Lost my interested in BitchX, it's an easy-to-install client, yes, but if you really like something that works, use irssi. It's newer than BitchX anyway, afaIk.

And newer is automatically better? Odd idea.

Cheers,
Tink

My BitchX NEVER does any autoconnecting.

Have you checked
~/.ircservers

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: You could have spotted that one in man BitchX

There is no such file on my system. What is it that I was supposed to have spotted? I'm telling you the behavior of the as-installed product. I don't think it should go connecting to every server in the world, willy-nilly, or even every server in the list I did mention, without being commanded to do so. This is what it does unless I specify -N.

Next!

Ok ... and which other files that BitchX man-page mentions as
configuration files have you checked? If none of them contains
the list you're talking about, have you tried a strace on bitch to
see which files it opens?

Most of the others don't exist either, as well as the whole directory /usr/local/lib/bx.

Thanks for the suggestion on strace. I'll have a look!
