Big probs installing xine

Ok, this has probably been asked before but couldn't find a suitable thread.

I'm trying to install a fresh version of the xine video player. I have found an unofficial one that supports encrypted dvd's here:

http://www.geocities.com/desktopmandrake/xine.htm

I followed the lin and downloaded all necessary files to play dvd's, windows media etc etc. I had a problem with not being able to uninstall a previous copy of xine and all of it's plugins so I followed the instructions in this thread here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/126167

I have successfully removed all of the dependancies that wouldn't allow me to install xine except these two

xinetd-2.3.11-4mdk
libxine1-1-0.rc0.7mdk

I constantly recieved messages like this one:

[root@localhost deejay]# rpm -e libxine1-1-0.rc0.7mdk
error: Failed dependencies:
libxine.so.1 is needed by (installed) libkdemultimedia1-common-3.1.3-16mdk
[root@localhost deejay]# rpm -e libkdemultimedia1-common-3.1.3-16mdk
error: Failed dependencies:
libartsbuilder.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libartsgui_idl.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libartsgui_kde.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libartsmidi_idl.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libartsmodules.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libmpeg.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libyafcore.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libyafxplayer.so.0 is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk
libkdemultimedia1-common = 3.1.3-16mdk is needed by (installed) kdemultimedia-common-3.1.3-16mdk

This is getting ridiculous. Please tell me I'm not expected to move all these dependacies to install 1 piece of damn software. Also these components seem quite important. Xine won't allow me to install without removing them however. It gives me the following errors:

[root@localhost deejay]# rpm -ivh libxine1-1_cvs-040116.i586.rpm
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/lib/libxine.so.1 from install of libxine1-1_cvs-040116 conflicts with file from package libxine1-1-0.rc0.7mdk

Can some please help me.

Cheers

A frusurated Linux user who wants to watch his DVD's on his computer so that he doesn't have to go into WIndows to watch them.

This kind of thing can happen easily when you use unofficial/unstable things. If you don't want to uninstall the other packages (you shouldn't), you could try overriding the dependency check. It's a command line parameter of rpm (check man page, I don't know the exact name).

If you do this you should manually install as much of the xine dependencies as you can without creating a dependency conflict, and then install the xine package with the override param.

Then if xine complains about not finding a certain library (it will probably want a different version of a library you have installed), you can try creating a symbolic link (ln -s) to the version you have and give it the name of the version xine expects.

This may well not work but you can give it a try

Well installed but now Xine just freezes at the splash screen. No error in the console or anything. Tried starting xine without splash screen and no GUI parameters but didn't work either. I'm over it, gonna use Windows to watch DVD's.

Also to frustrate even more, ksCD won't even start anymore so I can't listen to audio CDs. I just want to be able to do these things in Linux.

1. Browse Internet ---> Can Do
2. DVDs --- Nope
3. CD player ---> Nope
4. Video ---> Some file types so far
5. Use my digital camera ---> Can Do
6. Play certain games ---> Can Do

As you can see, it's the multimedia side of things I'm really having problems with. I wish there was some sort of Mandrake 9.2 straight out of the box guide for newbies that lists what to install straight away to get everything configured and runing nicely including how to uninstall previous versions.

I quit trying to get Gaim to work cos of the stupid SSL thing, even though I installed that particular RPM and linked it to the Mozilla SSL. I just use Amsn now which is fine.
