I myself enjoy Midnight commander.
|
midnight commander is not a window manager.
|
if i wrote a window manager for ascii-art lib or svgalib (or ncurses), would it be a window manager?

Why not there was a project going on a couple of years ago based on that exact idea, so welcome anti-desktop http://themes.freshmeat.net/articles/view/581/
which is follow up of what was abondon. |
Try Blackbox and/or one of its varients (Fluxbox, Openbox, Waimea, etc.). They're minimal, light and fast and they free up your system resources for little things like running apps.

Afterstep woul run fine on a computer that speed. You can use the gnome panel with it too. Dont run wharf or the winlist, for some reason wharf especially can use alot of processor. I used to run afterstep on a 133mhz and it was fast enough. Id recommend compiling yourself, there are some useful configure options. |
the question was supposed to be one of those unanswerable questions (e.g. if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around, does it make a sound?)...can you have a window manager if you have no windowing system? the answer, of course, is no. this is because it would not be a window manager, per say, but more likely a shell or some other term...
