best web development software?
I'm trying to convert all my daily tasks to Linux and I need a good web development program. I currently use Dreamweaver with Windows. I do a bunch of server side programming and mostly code by hand, but I use the visual editor at times too. Any suggestions?

I've dabbled with Quanta bit, seems to be pretty good. Some mention BlueFish to be quite good, never tried it though. In the end, your hard corps developers will squeeze in the "Nothing beats vi", which, well, might be right ;)
There are a few others that I gave 10 second chances to, but Quanta is the one I use occasionally when I just wanna click a button instead of type <b></b> ;) Cool |
Hey, MasterC, don't dis vi. =-} (you asked for it)
Does Quanta add extraneous crap like most HTML-specific editors? Does it provide easy server-side includes of other files (like headers or footers)? Lastly, does it allow hand editing if you're particular about things? |
:D See. ;) Nah, moses, most of the time I use vim as well. Just every so often, when I get in a "click and go" mood, I prefer Quanta. Nothing quite beats creating a bunch of stuff made out of letters/numbers/characters and turning it into a nice looking webpage. :)

Right you are, that's what Linux is all about to me, doing things by hand.
Actually, those were honest-to-goodness questions. =-} |

Major drawback of Quanta is it's speed. It's a QT app, so it opens as slow as any other KDE application does..
Other than that, I can't think of too many problems with it. Cool |
Yeah, the speed's one of the things I cringed at when I glanced at their web page. Stupid DCOP server crap when I don't run KDE pisses me off. =-} (Same with the Oaf or whatever process manager Gnome uses)
|
Exactly. If one is already used to doing things by hand, there really is no need for Quanta. But for someone looking for a GUI/Dreamweaver like app, it's not a bad option. ;)

I'll need to start investing my time in other distros (Suck it, Moses, suck it up). |
hey moses, you wanna tell me more about that part time at home web job? email me at ejunksux@hotmail.com, that would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks a lot for the input guys, I'll check out Quanta and vi. |

As for investing time in other distros, pfff. I'm sure you could easily walk up to a machine (or ssh in) and within seconds figure out: rpm -qa | grep blah Pfff. I really don't think that any other distro out there would cause, especially you, any problems when troubleshooting. Well, except suSe and their non-standard "standardized" issues.... ;) Besides if they are calling you for support, I'm sure it's gonna be something more in depth and require actual linux knowledge, not distro-specific crap (I could be way wrong though). :) Cool |
Well, I talked (emailed) with the guy this morning and it looks like they've already filled the web development position (sorry Moebius). I ASSume anyone who is looking to install linux on one of the laptops these guys sell will have some knowledge of linux, so I'm not too concerned. The issue is that IF they even offer the job, I'd want to know enough about random distros not to make the company look foolish when helping someone who doesn't know much about RH or Debian or whatever they are installing.

I tried Quanta the other day. It auto-magically ended my tags for me. I'm really lazy. I like it! :D

Laziness, a tell-tale sign of Hunger. You need a Snickers. :D
