Best way to update out-of-distro software

Hello,

I was just wondering how people usually handle upgrading newer versions of software even though they haven't been added to the distro's packages list.
For example i am running Debian 8 and have VirtualBox 5.1 installed as it is the newest version for the distro. However if i want to install and download the newest 5.2 .deb package from their site, i'd have to uninstall 5.1 with my package manager and install 5.2 separately. Is there a way for me to just update my existing installation so that it still gets managed by the package manager? Thanks.

I log the install, so I can uninstall and install the new version manually. I rarely have to these days, the repo systems are pretty good.

maybe a repository exists for virtualbox? that would need to be added to your sources?
i would not necessarily recommend that, but checked carefully and done properly, it seems the correct answer.

edit:
oops, i missed the fact that this is debian 8.
maybe a backport then?

or, what keeps you from upgrading debian?

Thanks for the replies
Nothing keeps me from upgrading other than sheer laziness. I will do it at some point.
For now i'll just install 5.2 manually.
