Best way to retrieve data

What is the best way to retrieve data from the most popular Linux/Mac operating systems, and from the most popular file systems? (when I say 'popular' I mean the ones which regular people use like NTFS, FAT, EXT..)

Would you use a LiveCD? What liveCD would you use for PPC?

I'm not necessarily talking about a computer that has corrupt data, but also computers which you can't log in on- no, I just want to learn everything there is to know about data recovery :)

To "retrieve" data from popular filesystems all you need is any live cd with root user,
For data recovery, use System Rescue CD.

Does that work on a PowerPC? I'd heard that Knoppix was one of the best liveCD to recover data, but then when I tried it on my girlfriend's Mac it didn't work because of the PPC architecture. Which architectures are the most used? And what liveCD is the best for each one?
