Best video player and other software to try
Hey, I just got the new Fedora Core 1 up and running(for the most part) and I am wondering about a few things. First of all has anybody already got this going and found a good video and/or audio player. Second of all, my system still needs to be tweaked a little and I could use a little help. I got a nforce 2 mobo and need drivers for the built in AC97 audio as well as the onboard LAN. I also have an Xterasys wLAN. It is the XN-2511b model and is 802.11b compliant in case you dont know. I am having problems getting that working, if anybody could assist, that would be great. By the way I am a bit of a newbie so try to keep that mind if you find yourself helping me out.

Get the nforce drivers from there, and READ THE DOCUMENTATION. I cannot stress that enough. No wizard is going to pop up and guide you, but it's not very hard either. Video==mplayer Audio==xmms |
Video player: Mplayer, but does audio as well
Audio: XMMS I almost certain they are in your dist, so they're very easy to install... |
Mplayer is better installed from source.
|
You can try xine too. It's a good video player.
|
I use mplayer, its awesome! Is there any other media player better than mplayer?
|
Well, I tried to get mplayer and xine, because I couldnt get the first to work. In the end, neither are working. I think that I installed them correctly because I used as many online guides and walkthroughs as I could find. What is my next step, does anybody know what to do next to figure out what is wrong.

How did you install mplayer? The best way is to go to www.mplayerhq.hu, get the source and compile it. The first time is a little tricky, you'll undoubtedly have some dependency problems. This may also be a good time to get yourself apt4rpm. I think it's available from either sourceforge or berlios.

VideoLAN
This my choice for a media player for audio and video.
|
Well, I did get the source and compile it. As far as I know it went flawlessly, except that the finished product doesnt work. I will have to get apt4rpm and give it another try.

video player: mplayer , installed from source. I had a little trouble configuring it with the right output devices, but after i got that straightened out it works better than anything else I've used in Linux, Windows, or Mac.
Other GUI software to try.... image viewer: XnView music mixing: Ardour sound editing: Sweep cdrecord frontend: gcombust mp3 rip (cdparanoia/lame) frontend: dekagen system monitor: GKrellM process manager: qps code editing: Bluefish vector animation: Moho web browser: Mozilla Firebird |
If I was just going to try for a fresh install, would you recommend that I get rid of my current version entirely. If so, since I don't know the best way to do that. what would be the best/easiest way to remove the first installation.

Well, the only error message I got was that my X11 video was wrong and I needed XFree86-devel, or something to that effect. So I got that and tried again and it installed, but when I try and run it, it just doent work, no matter what I try. I have tried to open it in every way I can think of. Through command, changing default video player, etc. Yes, I did put all the codecs in the location it requested, untar'd before compiling. I really just dont know.

What error messages are you getting when you try to run mplayer?
