Best Video Downloader for Linux

If a friend has a video, he puts it on youtube and I go to the site and download it. Some are 2 and 3 hours long.

I used youtubedownloader but it only downloads about an hour of it. Says it all there, but if you try and jump ahead, it disappears.

What's the best video downloader for videos in Linux?

Thank you,
Chris.

This article mentions several you might want to try: https://www.lifewire.com/download-yo...eos-p2-2202105

The only one I've used is youtube-dl and it worked fine for me, but I've not used it to download an hour-long video.

video download helper is a plugin for firefox. It seems to work on any-sized videos.

youtube-dl is what I mostly use. Many times you have to override defaults for best results.

$ youtube-dl --list-formats URL
$ youtube-dl --format 23 URL

Or whatever number goes with the best option. On a few I have to download two videos, one for best video, one for best audio, and mux them together with avconv or ffmpeg. My computer(s) are good enough to play the best available version, but my connection to the internet isn't fast enough, so I have to download it in less than realtime. So might as well opt for the upgrade while I sleep away the bits.

$ avprobe video.ext
$ avprobe audio.ext

get the particulars of what is in the file. Like DURATION, resolution, fps, format, et cetera.

$ avconv -i audio.ext -vn -sn -acodec copy -y audio_only.aac
$ avconv -i video.ext -an -sn -vcodec copy -y video_only.mp4

extract the audio only and video only parts of two differently formatted videos.

$ faad -o audio_only.wav audio_only.aac
$ avconv -i video_only.mp4 -i audio_only.wav -sn -vcodec copy -acodec copy -y new_video.mp4
$ mpv new_video.mp4

convert the audio, mux it back with the video, and play it.

Plus or minus a few options, but the basic jist of extracting and merging video parts without re-encoding per say. Sometimes the video you want isn't directly available. Especially with recent uploads that haven't been fully processed into "options" by youtubes backend. And things change on you so sometimes only a bleeding edge distro with the most recent version of youtube-dl will do. And even then you might have to wait a day for the dust to settle and things to work.

I would take a guess that you're losing connection mid-download or grabbing a version (--format ###) that is incomplete by default. Sometimes it's just the video that is incomplete. The uploader lost connection and didn't notice and it is what it is.

I think I read on the youtube-dl webpages somewhere that they recommend to NOT install this python script via your distro's package management, but use the latest git version/release instead.
it makes sense, because
a) it's "only" a python script and should work well regardless of distro & architecture
b) the devs are VERY quick in reacting to changes in youtube's api/layout

so, with the newest version of youtube-dl, it chooses by default from all formats (audio and video) the HIGHEST quality (not always what you want maybe) and, if that is found in different streams, muxes them together AUTOMATICALLY. i'm sure this can also be automated for custom selections.

please read the documentation, it's got an extremely detailed man page etc.
