Best Version Of Linux

I know that this is not a question that can be answered but more of an opinion, i see in the linux downloads that list top ten as mandrake , suse, fedora ..... anybody who has tested most of these versions might be able to give me an idea of the + and - 's of the different versions, also all linux is run off of the unix core so just about all versions will run mostly the same apps? i downloaded mandrivia linux, as far as i can tell mandrake just changed the name? maybe if i can partition some extra space ill install a few different ones and try them , i dont know i triple boot as it is and i used to quad boot and it was hard to keep them all seperate, especially microsoft as some apps assume the system root is c and this screws you up if it is really d or e. anybody know of a good app to controll all multi booting and hide partitions from os except the necessary ones, i havent seen this but i think it could be done, like set up all partitions and choose which ones for which profile then boot and choose the correct profile and the other drives are hidden, treating whatever partition as c or hda, "/" etc so the os can be installed as a single os with no multiboot and have no knowledge that there are other partitions and os's on the hard drive, maybe this exists , maybe its possible, or maybe i am not thinkin it all the way through and it would take more than just software like a different bios with different hardware connections. at any rate i think it would be nice to create system profiles in each an assign a "logical" order to disk partitions with hidden uneccesary ones, in a sence you would not be multi booting, you would have a computer with multiple personalities similar to the hard drive caddy that you can swap hard drives without opening the machine:)

May I respectfully suggest that you include puncutation, capitalization and something resembling a sentnce structure in your posts? Reading stuff like this only gives people headaches.

XavierP 11-18-2005 02:45 PM

And paragraphs. I like paragraphs. Really, until you fix this all you will get are responses based on your thread structure.

AshTray900 11-18-2005 02:51 PM

If it hurts your head to read words without periods and capitol letters then just ignore my post, i am not writing a book, i am posting on the internet and i am not going to take the time to format a paragraph, run a spell check, formulate a thesis etc what gives people headaces is getting replies like yours, they are totally pointless and only waste bytes on somebodies server. if a web forum is an important enough means of communication to you then go right ahead and show off your grammar skills but i really dont care enough to waste my time doing so

foo_bar_foo 11-18-2005 03:07 PM

AshTray900,
good response.
internet is about free speech.
some people think english class style conformity (and all other types of social conformity) are more important that depth and substance.
grub the Linux bootloader will do exactly what you said.
Linux breaks down in to a few catagories
Distributions based on RedHat (sucks) .rpm package base
Distributions based on Debian (sucks way less) .deb package base
self compiled distributions (sucks even more less but requires some knowhow)
and Slackware which is in a catagory all it's own because it never evolved and is like very early linux distributions.

thank you foo_bar_foo for a post with information that i can use ;) i like grub but i didnt know it would go to that extent. i do have the red hat release i will try another version

as far as grammar class goes this thread is over, i see that hangdog42 is trying to proove a point, but he forgot one thing... my text wasnt that unreadable and as far as his post goes, i dont feel like wasting my time to decode it so i will ignore it just as i suggested to him in regards to my post, i am not trying to be unfriendly to anyone i just find that on every forum there are those few people that will do that to you to the point of the user having to sift through smart allik replies to find the information he needs. i know my grammar was bad but im a grown man and choose to write however i choose and it is kind of rude when someone keeps pointing out mistakes you make when there were no standards to obide by in the first place

I don't want to be unfriendly, too. You don't have to write "correct" grammar, there's no such rule. On the other hand you cannot expect others to read badly formatted and so -- in their point of view -- unreadable text. You don't have to use another writing style, but to get more responses it would probably be useful. You cut yourself from other opinions and tips. That's all. And no offense intended.

Nobody is asking you to write like you are writing a book. They are only asking you to use correct grammar to assist communication. Using correct grammar is never a waste of time. Failing to use it only demonstrates your laziness and total disregard for your readers. Your response shows you are totally living in a "me-centered" world. You are worried about wasting excess bytes on someone's server but not using proper communication skills when interacting with humans who are more important than servers. I think you got your priorities wrong.

This is not about free speech. It is about reading comprehension and good grammar helps others to comprehend what the writer is trying to say.

titopoquito You are right, i can accept that my text may be unreadible to someone else, i just sit at the computer and spit out words knowing that somebody will reply and it will take somebody that thinks like me to read my text to its fullest, and therefore that person, thinking like me, will give me the most understandible response back. no offense taken i didnt mean to come accross as extremely offended either

AshTray900 11-18-2005 04:38 PM

bcarpenter you are right to i am living in a "me centered" world or that is "me and those close to me centered" world i do not care who and who cant read my post, i do care about other humans, but i care about myself more and what makes me happy is more important. everybody is "me-centered" to say otherwise is foolish i mean all you have to do is put a restraint on resources and you see how me centered everyone is. so like i said back at the very begining if you cant read it then dont because it wasnt meant for you. i want response from a common minded individual.

Scyther 11-18-2005 04:48 PM

It's not like you are forced to read something in my opinion. If you think something is unreadable, then don't read it.

I think everybody is free to use whatever language he wants, but i agree that, if you want more people te read your posts, you should use some more civilised way of communication ;).

But all this isn't really worth the discussion. We should just be friendly to eachother.

If you are judging whether someone is like you by their ability to comprehend your poor writing, then may I suggest you get a new standard of judgment?

If someone makes a statement about their inability to read your post then the best thing to have done was to apologize and rewrite your post. Your reputation would have soared. However you just care about yourself so reputation does not mean anything to you.

If you make your own happiness your goal then you are heading for a brick wall at ninety miles per hour. Happiness comes from helping others not from serving yourself. Also if there is a restraint on resources the quickest way to overcome that is to work together. The "every man for himself" mentality is the quickest way to extinction.

BTW - Linux is about community not about "me".

Excuse me, is there any way I could get back the 2 minutes I just wasted reading this thread? Wouldn't it be better to just NOT post than to piss everybody off talking about grammar and sentence structure? If he's not getting the answers he needs, he'll get the point.

AshTray900 11-18-2005 05:50 PM

i wasnt saying that the everyman for himself response was the best i was saying that it is the result when the sh** hits the fan, i am not trying to be rude , i was treated rudely by those who felt it necessary to reply with worthless comments which i know i am now doing but i am defending myself now, personally i only care about my reputation when it comes to people that i admire, and i dont admire anybody who would give a guy such a hard time about something silly like english grammar. and other people are important to me however me and my family are the most important and i am happy, i dont need a reputation from others or approval from people on the internet. like i said before i dont care enough about chatting on the internet to worry about sentence structure, just look at the internet, it is full of informal writing , thats the way it is get over it im sorry things other people do give me a headache also but i let it alone, i either take the time to go through it or ignore it, and i did get the response i needed
