Best Text Editor?

I'm using Mandrake 9.1 and I would like to know what would be a really good text editor.

It depends what you wnat to use it for - the 2 I use are vi and kate. As well as perl for text manipulation.

Without no hesitation VIM!
It has exactly what I search for in a text editor, and not more(like in Emacs).
It has syntax highlights(for some programming languages), it's small, and it's in every linux distro.

vi is installed by default, I think. See the vi cheat sheet for help in using it.

For Mandrake, I suggest the editor in mc (Midnight Commander) for a command line editor as it is on the install disk.

For a simple no-brainer editor, nano, the GNU pico clone is good.

Emacs is powerful and popular. Basically the two big ones are vim and emacs, which you prefer is a matter of personal preference, try them both. Emacs has a large number of potential features.
