best stratgety for removing package installed by src?

hi. I tried installing a program by source and can't get it working. I want to remove all of the components it installed but not sure what all those components are. Is there typically a log or some source or some file that would tell me that usually comes with source? I was going to do make it with checkinstall but it wasn't working then figured out after that it was because checkinstall wasn't in the $PATH variable but i had already done make install. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
