Best Option for Media Center Desktop
Hi Everyone!
In the past few months I returned from a mision trip. Before I left I had set up a mythTV box, it was pretty sweet, but at this point extremely out of date (has been sitting since august 2010), and my needs/desires have changed. What I want to do now is turn the box into a more strictly internet based device, whereas with mythTV I was using TV tuners to record live TV etc, I now only want to use it for streaming pictures, videos, music, hulu, netflix, youtube etc. I know that netflix for example is going to require using wine or something like that, and I've found that it is available for ubuntu. My preferred distro is Fedora, but I don't mind other distros. What is available that is a light frontend that offers these features, and/or the tweakability to get netflix running through this? Also, what remote control would you recommend for compatibility - I want this to be sleek and non-intrusive...? I finish finals this week and want to get all of this going during the break :) Note I'll be wanting to run a fileserver in the background for home backup etc. Thanks for your input! -MJ |
Arch w/ Openbox is light and allows you to control all options.

I just read around a bit about Netflix and from what I can gather it works, just, under WINE if your PC is fast enough and you've a recent enough version of WINE. Personally I'd not rely on being able to use Netflix under Linux at all.
This site claims it works though, so perhaps I'm overly pessimistic: http://freethoughtblogs.com/lousycan...-through-wine/ |
"netflix running "
I never could get netflix to work. |
There is a relatively new package out there pulls together all the needed settings and dependencies to get Netflix running. It is in the ARCH aur "netflix-desktop'. I have it running on two of my machines with no issue. :D
