best opengl performance ?
Hey all,
I'm planning on buying either a new nvidia or ATI card soon but havn't made up my mind. I know that nvidia has good driver support and it works well with XFree because i've used it. I also know that ATI has poor driver support. I am wondering if the poor driver support for ATI = substantial loss of performance. Does anyone have any experience with ATI drivers here ? How did the performance compare to that of a windows machine ? (I know my nvidia card tends to have a higher FPS in linux). Thanks, Jeremie |
well i am not sure as of the comparisons cause i absolutely hate ati (in turn meaning i dont' use it ) and the nvidia chipset beats them hands down...so i suggest nvidia since they are the best (there is no arguement and this is not just a personal opinion) then why dont you stick with it...and if you get better performance in linux, then dont' you think that new FX5900 will just rock your world :D and like you said there is better driver support, so thats reason enough to save grief ... :p

I bought my ATI Radeon 9000 Pro about a year and half ago, I guess, before I ever had experience in linux.
After I tried it in linux, there was a bit of a headache gettin the 3d Acceleration to work. But once it did, I get great framerates in linux -- much better than I had in Windows. Granted, this is an older card -- still good, but older. So the support finally evolved around to greet it. The newer Radeons just got the driver released. Not too much of a headache anymore. I say go with whichever -- all the radeons are working now. -Shade |

I say go with whichever -- all the radeons are working now. i assume part of the raedons drivers is an accelerated OpenGL library, any chance you can tell me what happens when you try and run an OGL app through a remote x connection because i want to be able to do this and the nvidia library just segfaults. |
thanks
Thanks for the info guys. This will really help me decide.
