Best Mediaplayer?
I've got a stupid but seriously question...
I've installed many video-player but the most doesn't work with divx files.
I've got SuSE Linux 8.2 and i just need a player that got a pretty gui and supports many files. I've tested kmplayer mplayer and xine but often there are troubles with the fileformat and codecs.
Something you could recommend me?

Thanks, pacman.

mplayer all the way, it is by far the best player i've ever used (nicluding windows). Xine is also very competent, but i hate it. other than that there is nothing that comes close. not because there is nothing else, just that mplayer is superb. if you are having issues with it, then just ask.

Here are some messages that appear when i want to start a .avi
MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: key_events
MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a "gdb" backtrace and disassembly. For details see DOCS/bugreports.html#crash.b.

but i haven't any idea what to make.

I've reinstalled kmplayer and mplayer but it still doesn't work, mplayer only makes failure and kmplayer doesn't play it.

Pacman, mplayer is the way to go. I have Suse 8.2 also. The mplayer that comes with it does not have dvd or divx support compiled in.

Here is what I tell everyone when it comes to mplayer:

Use Yast and remove the mplayer RPM.

Download the latest mplayer source.tar.gz and

make install

That will solve all your problems.

Also, you will want to go into Yast and flag kmplayer so that nothing removes it. Or, when you remove mplayer it will also remove kmplayer. That's how I get it going.

One more tip:

If you are going to use mencoder to encode dvd's with mp3 you will need to get the latest version of lame.source.tar.gz and

make install

BEFORE you compile mplayer. Then everything is great. I had some problems with the rpm's and mplayer not seeing lame after I installed it.

I'm sure there is other ways to do this but, with my SUSE 8.2 that is how I have done it with no problems.

firstly, forget kmplayer, mplayer already has a GUI, a kde front end is just a waste of time.

as for the crash though.. that is a bit odd... have you tried a different file? how did you install mplayer? if it was from RPM, only use the official releases from

VLC. Nuff said.

Its awesome. Its easy to compile (unlike mplayer), fast, and supports every format you can think of.

And its got a decent GUI, GTK+ I believe.

Its easy to compile (unlike mplayer)
mplayer is a doddle, absolutely simple, you just only get what you give, so it can take some time to get the vast array of support and such

every format? does it play real media?

Okay, I have MPlayer installed, but no GUI really. If I doubleclick on a file or launch a file from the console, then it plays. But I see no buttons to open additional files or to adjust anything. All I can do is scan forward and back with the arrows and pause it with the spacebar... How do you end up installing skins? Would I have to recompile mplayer? That would be a real pain since it takes forever...

acid_kewpie 06-12-2003 04:47 PM

you use gmplayer to open the skin, assuming you have installed a skin or two.

using a command line for playing videos is SO SO SO much easier and faster, there are full key lists in the mplayer docs.

Acid, what's wrong with KMplayer being a different front-end for mplayer?

I use both to a point. When full screen with KMPlayer you get a nice line of buttons (Start/Stop/Pause etc) across the bottom of the screen. Useful in certain situations.

Best one? Yes, MPlayer/KMPlayer!

Well, Mplayer took an hour and a half to compile on my 2Ghz P4, and VLC (without errors, the first time) took 10 minutes. I call that easier. Because I have things to do (well, not really).

if Mplayer took an hour and a half to compile, then you have a shafted computer...
