best media server software

I have an old pc I am using as a server running debian. I want to keep music and movies on this server and stream them to my android tablet and laptop. What software is the best for this purpose? I have taken a look at Plex but i'm not sure it will do what I want it to. Any suggestion is helpful, thanks.

i would take an other look at plex. its a great media server. sadly IIRC the android app is not free, but its money well spent (6$ IIRC)

i have a CentOS 6.x server running NFS and PlexMediaServer for my home media. works like a champ. well it did until my hardware took a nose dive into the abyss that is.
