Best Linux alternative to Windows program Info Select
 

Info Select is an overly expensive, ugly Windows program with poor support and too many unnecessary add-ons – but it has an amazing capacity for random data retrieval which keeps its users loyal.

Even with tens of thousands of random notes large and small, saved web pages, articles, whatever — lighting fast boolean searches reveal all relevant items instantly.

Is there a program or utility available for Linux which will do something similar in saving and retrieving large amounts of random text data?

grep might help. or one of these.

Grep is a little beyond my present capabilities, but it's now on my todo list.

For the benefit of posterity, I've been directed to BasKet and it comes close to Info Select's note-taking and search capability:

It's a real gem.

Try this,

Enter in a "file name" or subject.
To refine the search the search enter the "details"
less will enable you to view the results one screen at a time.
You can scroll up and down while looking at the results.

I've found my way to this post with the same question. InfoSelect, previously, Tornado notes, is amazing in how it allows us to collect random bits of data and make sense out of them. For my purpose, an application is needed, not just search capability.

I'm looking at QuickFox Notes and ReminderFox, both useful addons to Firefox and Thunderbird, but not quite the same as InfoSelect.

I'm also looking at Rednotebook and TaskCoach as possibilities which run under windows and linux.

I love Time & Chaos for contact management, but a little light on the notes side and windows only <sigh>.

Care to share your ideas and progress in 2011?

RedNoteBook looks promising up to a point.

You might also want to check out Zim. It's Tomboy Notes on steroids, multi-platform and easily synchronized using Dropbox.

None of these applications match the capabilities and ease of use of Info Select or Evernote, but if you employ more than one of them you can come close.

I, along with a lot of others, have abandoned Info Select for Evernote (Mac, Windows, and most smartphones). Sadly, the Evernote folk have no plans to develop a local Linux client, but there's a third party open source Evernote client called Nixnote which works reasonably well and Evernote runs well under Wine.
