Best (beginner's) Japanese input method?

Greetings!

I am starting a Japanese language course this quarter.

I've never actually typed in any other language short of extremely short phrases typed with raw Unicode, using a character map program. This seems unlikely to work on a regular basis.

I was wondering, are there any Japanese typists out there who could recommend an input system for typing Japanese text in KDE?

Thanks!

Kiten

There's a Japanese-English dictionary that's part of KDE called "kiten". It has an input system where you can type Romaji and it immediately converts it to Hiragana or Katakana (Hold down Shift as you're typing for the latter). You just hit Shift+Space to enter Japanese input mode.

I hope that helps...

See this page for info on multilingual support. There are a couple of ime methods and several kanji-server backends available. I personally use scim+anthy myself.

Thanks a bundle!

SCIM+anthy seems to work well; still experimenting with it (experimenting, of course, knowing nothing about the characters yet :-P), but I think i'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Thanks again!
