beryl and IBM A30 laptop

I just upgraded my Kubuntu installation on this IBM A-30 laptop to 7.04.

Now, I really like beryl, and I had not tried to install it on this laptop because, well, the laptop is 6 years old and I rather thought I'd have problems.

So, yesterday, I said "why not", and installed beryl.

Beryl installed and immediately worked. It not only works, it works well. I have the cube on my 6 year old laptop!

This laptop was high-end for its day; I suppose that helps. However it still has an ATI Mobility 9000 video chipest (support dropped by ATI in 2005 I think it was), a 1.1 GHz P-3, and 384 Megs of RAM. I expected it to be very limited.

Well it isn't. Beryl works well and the system isn't loaded down. I'm running the processor in power saving mode which means my 1.1 GHz processor is usually running at about 750 MHz, and at that the processor load is not usually maxing out.

Very cool. Hmmm...I wonder if this means that this laptop would qualify for an upgrade from WinXP Pro (on dual boot with Kubuntu) to vista... ( I would!)

I guess it is more of a success story, which would better fit in special forum. Anyway, congratulations. And no, for Vista-readiness you need running Lava Lite screensaver from xscreensaver package with maximum settings....

Success story? I suppose.

I actually posted it because I suspect the configuration is pretty common (ATI Radeon Mobility plus P-3) and therefore others can be appropriately directed.

I actually thought it wouldn't work, or would work so badly I'd uninstall it. But it seems to work well.

It's great to find this thread, because I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 on an A30 I just got, and was hoping to try out beryl on it.

So far, I can't get it to install, and I was hoping you'd give me some pointers. The trick is that all the walkthroughs (I'm pretty much a linux newb, not afraid of bash but I don't know it) are based on installing the fglrx driver, which apparently works for most ATI cards but not the one that ships with the A30.

On top of that, when I try to apt-get install beryl I just get a lot of messages about missing dependencies, which makes me think I have the wrong repository or something... anyway, I can keep working on figuring that out. I was mostly just hoping you'd tell me what you used for drivers and anything else I'd need to know about the installation.

I'm loving this new (to me) extremely heavy laptop--I hadn't realized when I snagged it off ebay that the A line was pretty much top of the line in its day. I'm impressed overall with the performance.

Edit to add: Got it working! The secret was to use the simplest instructions--nothing fancy. It seems to be working perfectly.
