Beginner FTP issues

I have RedHat 8.0 installed on my machine, and I need to set it up as an FTP server....I've modified the Firewall settings to allow FTP traffic, and I've downloaded ProFtpd. Seemed to install successfully, and I "configured" it using Webmin. All I did was allow anonymous connections so I could make sure it works...Well, it doesn't. It appears that there's no FTP service running on my machine! Is there a trick to this?? I've gone back and tried to install the wu-ftp package off my installation CD, but it just completely hangs. Could my #3 Installation CD be bad, and maybe it never got installed in the first place? Thanks for any suggestions or advice.:newbie:

I'm a complete newbie myself. So someone please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't know all the answers, hell, i don't know many at all :)

I used vsftpd. It comes with RH8 as well. I know for vsftpd (which I have working great, btw) requires me to enable xinetd as well as vsftpd from my "Service Configuration" which is located in gnome under server settings. Do you have those enabled?

Under system tools-->services, there is a list of all the services that are installed and lists which ones get started on boot. On my system I have wu-ftp installed, but it doesn't start. It does, however, require that xinetd also be running, so that might be your problem. You can selectively start services with this gui, as well as same them to be started again on next boot. See if that helps move you along. :)

If the install of wu-ftp the only RPM that fails to install, or is it all RPMs. There is a known issue many have encountered

then navigate to 'RPMS stop working'
