before repartitioning for dual boot

Reading a book, on how to put linux and windows on the same system, it tells that if you have a disk already using full space by wz partition you have to repartitioned with fips or partition magic and that before doing so, you have to scan disk and defrag . Until then, it's OK but it says that YOU HAVE TO REMOVE HIDDEN FILES THAT CAN CHOSE TO INSTALL THEMSELVES AT THE END OF THE DISK AND WITCH DEFRAG WON'T MOVE BY ITSELF.
The question is:
that are those files and how can you tell that they are at the end of the disk ( I know that you can see a 'presence' with the DETAIL option, but it doesn't tell you witch file is there as far as i know)
I never bother with what but since it is writen in more that one book, i would apreciate a feedback.
thanks

IIRC, this only happens with some brand pc's that offer a "restore" of the OS to a "pristine" state, like I think Compaqs(?) and Dells(?) do. These and/or backup software could even have a separate system or backup partition. If you don't have weird antivirus/backup/restore software I think it's no problem, when using Partition Magic I never had any (major) probs shrinking/moving/duplicating windoze or linux partitions.
