Unhappy Been trying to install Red Hat 7.0 for the past 3 days w/o success, HELP!!!

Hello, I'm totally new to Linux and is having problem installing. Hope to get some help, =/

I'm trying to dual-boot Win Me and Red Hat 7.0 on my 15gb hard drive. My computer is a PIII 600 with 128MB PC-133, Diamond Stealth III S540 32mb, and a Hansol Mazellan 500P monitor, yeah I know it's unimpressive, but I'm poor, =P

Any how, I first started by making a Ext2 partition using partition Magic. Then, I rebooted my computer with the R.H. CD. I entered the installation screen, but it's kinna messed up, especially when I attempted to scroll the choices. Is it due to my cheap Video card? And then, I chose to install a workstation. And when they asked me to do the partition, I tried both to let them do it automatically and also tried to use Disk Druid.

First, I tried to use Disk Druid. It shows my two partions, Win's FAT32, and the partition I created using Partition Magic, Linux Native. WHAT DO I DO NEXT??? AM I DOING THE RIGHT THINGS SO FAR??

Then, I tried choosing the "automatic partition" option. Everything installed fine. Except that when they tried to detect my monitor, they did not have that in the list so they used a "prob" or somethign like that and come up with something funny like "Hnsl05" but it kinna resembles Handol. Also, I think there is a choise where they ask me about my "resolution", at least...that's what I THINK they asked. I chose 16bit with 800x600 because that's what I use when I'm in Win ME. When the installation is completed, the computer rebooted and the Lilo started Linux, I logged in ok and everything, but when I used the "startx" comman to try to get to the GUI, it gave me some kinna error message, something like um... can not define a "800x600" mode, or something like that. WHAT SHOULD I DO???

Ok, I know you're all tired of reading this, but I'm almost done, =P

Even if I install R.H. successfully, do I HAVE to use the Linux Lilo? Can I use Boot Magic instead? After installing R.H. using the "automatic patition", Boot Magic still did not regonize the new OS, it DOES regonize the new partition though, why?

Ok, last question, for realz. =P After failling to install R.H. so many times, I kinna gave up at one time. I used Partition Magic to format all the new partitions and joined them all together. So now, my H.D. is in one piece, at least it seems. But when I start my computer, the LILO still comes up and attemps to load Linux, and It actually DID do something before running into error and stoped. Why is this happeneing? I thought I formatted the partitions and joined them together? why is LiLo still running, HOW DO I GET RID OF IT??

Thanks for any help you guys and give me, I really appreciate it.

Uhm. U should really have 3 partitions. Fat32 for ME, Linux native and Linux swap. Jst add one at the end of the HD, u could go for 128Mb, but usually 64 or even 32Mb will do (YMMV).

Run XConfigurator, say yes to 800x600 mode choices.

Hell no. Its what we here for innit? What tires me is my UT fps rate (20-something), and yeah, Ive got a StealthIII as well :-]

Sure. Jst make sure Linux installs Lilo in its own partition, not in the MBR.

Uh. Did u accidentally install Lilo in the MBR? :-]

Ah. So u DID install Lilo in the MBR... Now if the root contains a boot.(4 digits) file, thats the old MBR Lilo saved when it installed itself in the MBR.
With lilo -u /dev/hda1 u could uninstall Lilo safely. Unfortunately u wiped Linux so u need a Windows bootdisk to execute "fdisk /mbr" to get the MBR back to the dos/win status.

If u lost ure bootdisks try http://www.bootdisk.com/ they got it all...

Thanks for the great help Unspawn. After all the fuss, I finally got Red Hat 7 running. =) Still have a couple of questions though. Ok, so I install the LiLO into the MBR, =( Now that both OS are running, can I still used Boot Magic vover MBR? how? run "fdisk/MBR" from my ME boot disk? And is there any way my Boot Magic id going to regonize the R.H.? now I truely don't mine using LiLo except that it gives you only line 5 seonds to make a choise between "Linux" and "Dos" If there's a solution to extend the wait time, I wouldn't mind just using the Lilo. =)

Now, the other problem I have is that my X desktop is NOT working very well. Let me try to describe. When I load "startx" I get into the desktop, but the screen is all black, except that I can see a couple of icons. If I double click and run somthing and that "something" maximinse itself, all I need to do is to minimise it, and I CAN SEE THE DESKTOP! why is this? my video card? It also messes up REAL bad, when I tried to toggle a scroll bar of a window, make the screen look like everything is overlapping each other. Ok, I did a good job of making this sound confusing, haha...hope you guys can at least understand a part of it. thanks a lot again Unspawn!! =)

you can increase the time of the wait.
there are two ways

1.) use linxconf. this program is graphical and i think will get things sorted in a nice graphical way BUT since you seem to be having problems with the graphics, ill tell you the old fashioned way.

2.) the old fashioned way. login and then type
su and enter the root password. you are now the superuser and so can do anything you like (so be careful. you might do damage [i have plenty of times before ]) . next type pico /etc/lilo.conf . this will open the configuration file for lilo in the 'pico' text editor. the should be a line near the top, after a line with 'prompt' in it which should look something like delay=50 . change the 50 to 300 (which will keep the prompt for 30 secs) or whatever you like. save the file and exit 'pico'. theb type lilo at the prompt. you'll see 'dos' and 'linux' (or whatever was in the file, it doesn;t matter) printed.

this should do it.

i think that the screen is messed up due to a bad configuration of Xfree86. maybe someone can give you a config file if they have a similar set up. you might need to upgrade Xfree86 to a new version. it might have better support.
