Battery monitor icon in Gnome / power management

I am running Debian Etch with Gnome, and I want an icon in the top menu that has a battery monitor. I was wondering what I should install and need to do this. Also, what do I need to be able to put the computer to sleep/hibernate. Thanks

Presumably you're using a laptop? What's the make and model? You'll sometimes find that battery monitors under Linux don't always work correctly, or at all. This is due to the manufacturers of the laptop and the BIOS not implementing the ACPI standards correctly. I have had to patch my kernels to get ACPI working on my Toshiba L10 laptop.

I'm not sure about the sleep/hibernate but I **think** it may be to do with how your kernel was compiled as to whether you can do this. Correct me if I'm wrong people!
