basic redhat software installing question

I am fairly new to linux but I should be able to install software, right?? Installing RPM's is really easy on redhat7.3 but what about non-rpm files??
I downloaded proftpd-1.25.tar.gz and uncompressed it into a sprecific directory. The first step to install it is to run the config file that will find out all the settings of my system and then create the proper make files needed to install the software. Well how do I run this config file?? Do I run it from the GUI using Nautilus? That is what I did and nothing happenes. When I read documents it tells me to use config anf make and some other basic commands but from where? I am just aliitle confused about the software installization procedures when using linux and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. Laugh all you want but I am trying really hard to break away from my windows addiciton-thanks!!!

I can't tell you how to do it from Nautilus, only from the command line:

Open a terminal (xterm,aterm,kterm whatever)
Change directory (cd) into the proftpd folder you untar'd.
Run configure (example) below.

#> cd /where/it/is/proftpd*
#> ./configure --prefix=/where/you/want/proftpd
#> make
#> make install

That should do it for you. Not all source files you download will compile with these extact steps like that, but a lot of them will. Always make sure to read the provided INSTALL or README files.
