Whenever I log into my server, I expect that .bash_profile in my home directory should execute. For some reason it doesn't. Basically all of my cool console settings are in .bashrc and .bash_profile is supposed to execute .bashrc.

It doesn't.

I have done some reserach, and I cannot seem to find why it's not executing. My user has execute permission on both scripts.

When I connect using ssh to the server, it doesn't execute. I copied the files into ~root/ and enter root using, 'su'. It executes for root, but not for me. Did I miss something here?

Any ideas?

Solved!

turns out in /etc/passwd I had:

david:x:1002:100::/home/david:

instead of

david:x:1002:100::/home/david:/bin/bash


Not sure how that happened, but it works now.
