I can either spent more to buy hardware from cisco, juniper, fortinet. But seems they filter only up to network level(layer 3) but not host (application) level?
Please let me know if the hardware firewalls are really better than tailor linux box.

I will suggest for Untangle with Squid & I am using it. I have forwarded all my network http traffic to Untangle with Squid in Transparent mode. I have configyred Delay Pools to restrict bandwidth.. To block https sites I used OpenDNS..
