Bacula - Restoring from a file

Hi Guys

I was wondering if anyone knew how, or if it is even possible, to restore from a Bacula backup file?

I have one particular machine that is fully backed up every night to disk and then that file is backed up to tape. I need to be able to access the backup file to prove to myself that the backup is restorable.

If I was doing this with Oracle RMAN I would know what to do, but I am not sure where to start with Bacula.

Cheers

Due to the lack of details here, have you seen http://wiki.bacula.org/doku.php ?

Yes, I have looked in the manual but it only seems to tell me how to restore using the volumes that are already known to Bacula. I want to be able to restore from a volume it doesn't know about.

In this case I have a backup file - glprodlx-Full-0003. The volume this file represents is reused over and over, however it is backed up to tape nightly by another system so that the file can be restored to a previous date. I have had this file restored from the beginning of the year - now I need bacula to see this file and allow me to restore the files that are backed up within it.

In Oracle RMAN I would do this - I would restore the backup files from tape to a local directory. I would then catalog those files so that RMAN knows where the files are and what they contain. Then I can perform the restore and it knows exactly where to go to get the files it needs.

Is there an equivalent in Bacula or am I stuck with only being able to restore the previous days data?

Cheers

Hi,

From your comments you have been looking at the wrong part of the manual. I think that you will find what you need in the "Disaster Recovery Using Bacula" section, particularly the "Restoring a Server" subsection; you should look at how to use the "bscan" program which can read a bacula volume - "glprodlx-Full-0003" in your case.
I am surprised that you seem to suggest that from your set-up you can only restore the previous day's data. In my set-up I backup to a hard-drive which saves up to around three months of data. Additional volumes are created as the previous ones are filled with file names using automatic labelling.

Sincere regards,

Thanks for your response.

Yes that's exactly what I needed!

Unfortunately I work in an environment where disk space is an issue so I cant afford to be storing that many backups of what we consider a secondary system. Our primary systems do have multiple volumes on disk.

Thanks for your help.
