Backup utility wanted
can someone recommend a backup utility that I use on a machine running DSL, please.
I have an old Dell pentium II that I want to set up to backup all my data files over a network. I could use ntbackup in windows but I obviously want to get away from M$ stuff. Many thanks. |
Since you are running a PII I gues you prefer something which is command line based.
I wrote something about my solution in this thread jlinkels |

thanks for those links people. I have had a look at them and they all seem a bit complex. tar and s tar seem to backup files while I want to back up whole directories in an incremental manner. That is, only backup directories and the files in them that have been changed.
The backup utility in XP seems fairly straight forward to use, just tick the directories to backup and the destination and schedule the task. Something in DSL would be nice. Cheers |
s tar does do incremental backups if you use the dumplevel option.

Well, rsync does incremental by default ... also can use compression & ssh for security.

DAR looks pretty good, actually ;) |
I need a Backup tool!
Hi All!
My company needs a backup tool to be able to manage the data of some other companies remotely. The data of the other companies should be stored at our server and the backup process should be done dayly or weekly and if possible automatically (but i think the problem is not the automation here). I have to manage project data and I also have to manage entire databases (Oracle, MySQL and maybe PostgreSQL). Does anyone know about such a backup utility? That would be great if it has a GUI, but that's not really necessery. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks a lot. |
Sorry!!
I wanted to start a new thread for this, but it seems I made something wrong... Really sorry! |
Thanks to everyone for those references, I will take a closer look at both DAR and STAR.
