Backup Ubuntu 7.10 on DVD - The Entire System

Hey guys!! Do any of you guys know what program out there allows me to backup my entire system (Ubuntu 7.10) on DVD? I want to backup my whole system on DVD so if something goes wrong, I can just insert my backed-up DVD in my laptop and restore my computer to the exact same state as it was before (same directories, files, folders, etc.). Thanks.

use the tar command to bundle & compress the files (see the tar man page for more info) and then you can use a standard dvd burning software (k3b and friends) to burn it to DVD

however ususally you don't back up the OS
usually you only back up the user data (aka your home folder)
