backup tools

Hi all,

i posted a similar question last week about backing up multiple directories with tar but after realising i have 40gb of data and the output file is actually bigger than the directories put together i had to gzip and so on totaling to a goot 5hours backup time (not good) so what I was hoping is that CPIO could be the answer but I am not in the right frame of mind to go through the man pages (it was a long night last night) anyway, what I want is something/anything script or otherwise that will allow me to compress multiple directories on the fly and then put them onto tape, i couldnt really care less how it is done as long as it doesnt take all night, does such a thing exist or should i just give up and go for a faceless corporations money making scheme (veritas and tapeware has the finger of blame) now im just ranting on, any help will be greatley appreciated,

Have a look at this:
http://www.amanda.org/

Another option, given the amt of data you specified and the time it will take anyway to put onto tape; given how cheap disks are these days, how about another box (or removable HDD) and use rsync..?
rsync has compression and encryption (ssh) abilities. Also, allows only differences to be sent, so after the initial backup, it'll be a LOT faster....

thanks, I appreciate the suggestion and believe me if i could go down that route I would, but unfortunately i cant, I use tapeware and have had a lot of problems, i have tried Arkeia but it wont find the tapes we use, DAR wont compile (i dont like compiling software either), Amanda ive looked at and i dont know whether its what we are looking for, i guess, i should just use gzip the files into one archive and backup up one file, so my next question is this,

using gzip how do you select multiple directories I.E. /root /home /data /dnchost /drawings and exclude multiple directories I.E. /data/lotusnotes /home/mgilbert and so on,

AND

can it be put into a script,
(i have no experience of scripting with linux)

Thanks again
