Backup software
howdy all,
We (.edu) have a backup server running RH7.3 with 4 Seagate Model STT8000N drives hanging on a Adaptec AIC7XXX card using Travan 8GB Imagion tapes. I have searched and searched for (free) backup software that can span our 4 drives. I presently use Arkeia on our mail server, but KNOX has about as much drive/tape support as my underware. Taper 6.9b-3 is nice when spanning with one drive, but I don't know if/how to use 4 drives. Tar and cipo just won't cut it. I want to keep my dir tree on the same tape or in the same archive to speed/ease recovery in the unfortunate case when it's needed. Right now, /home needs 2 tapes and other mounts are comming close. BRU is perfect, but for the price I would rather do a PO for a couple 160GB IDE HD's and backup to them...yes, I/we are really cheap...tight budget at this univ. So, anyone know of a backup solution? I'd really appreciate any pointers. Thanks, ___ WindersXP is great, if M$ hadn't released it I'd never started using Linux. |
Amanda
I've found some free software called Amanda. Looks like it will do everything I need.
Anyone used this before and know something that may help? |
I tried it and went back to Arkeia because it was so much easier to use. Arkeia supports just about every drive and tape. I don't know why you're having problems with it. You probably just need to pick a compatable tape drive.
I have a DLT by HP which isn't listed but is the same as Quantum dlt2000 which is the same as Compaq, etc, etc. It works like a gem. |
I'll try guessing/surfing for what the equiv tape/drive would be for Arkeia.
By chance do you have a combo guess for me. tape=travan 8GB/4GB drive=Seagate STT8000N I'll surf and see what I can figure out. thanks for the input. |
Got it to work
I set the drives to STD_QIC as well as the tapes. It's spanning just like I want it too.
Thanks for the help. |
I searched Arkeia and found users of this drive have used:
Tandberg SLR 5 Standard QIC-4GB |
I was just doing a search for Arkeia on the web and found that their web site is either down or no longer available. On freshmeat.net, their site is listed as http://www.arkeia.com/. Do they have a different site or have they gone the way of the dinosaur?

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Arkeia site is working. It can also be found at http://www.knox-software.com
