You first need to check whether Backtrack has detected the card and the chipset being used in the card. What is the output of running
Code:
/sbin/lspci| grep -i net

It seems like many distros have issues with the fast ethernet controller that you have on your system. Look for a Linux driver at this page.

Backtrack uses an older kernel than Ubuntu 8.10 and thats probably why it doesn't have the required drivers. If its a cd, then can be really difficult to build a driver because the kernel source maybe required and its usually not installed by default. You have to download the driver, extract the contents of the package and run the "install.sh" script.

What if i install it to hd?
i have windows vista, ubuntu already installed on my hard drive, now what if i install bactrack on my hard drive, as you have already said that it is difficult since i have a live-cd.
also i would be grateful if you could provide me the exact details to add ethernet drivers if installing backtrack on hard drive wont resolve the issue (running of install.sh etc)
thanks

If you install to hd that would make things a bit easier. You would need to install the kernel-source package (from the backtrack software sources) and then run the install.sh file. If the installation is successful, you would then use something like netconfig to configure the network interface.
