Backing up KMail

Is there a way I can backup my mail from inbox in KMail and then restore them again after I format?

I know I can simply just back up my ~/Mail folder to a CD (eg), but once I replace it with my backed up ~/Mail folder, will KMail simply take it into account and import the old mail back into the client?

should. i always back up my full home directory and after a couple of reinstalls of linux, using the backup home directory always had all the kmail settings set the way it was.
