azureus nat problem

I get crappy download speeds on azureus, most of the time its 10-12kb/s
There is also always the nat problem yellow face.
Ho do i fix this?
I changed incoming tcp port to something other then default.
There was also some talk on doing something with router, firewall.
How and what do I change?
I'm a newbie, running SUSE 9.1 pro

How do I check if I'm behind a router?
How do I enable port forwarding ?
I assume its done by software?

i think they meant "are you behind a firewall", as any computer connected to the internet is behind a router...

please explain how you are connected to the internet... like, what kinda connection (cable, dsl, etc...), hardware, and wheather or not you are using NAT (network address translation)...

i think suse comes with some firewall software, are you using that??

I have a dsl connection, I have a wireless card, and it catches the account of one of the many students in my complex.
I dunno what NAT is, I installed SUSE and internet was up automatically.
I do have a firewall (SUSE had a firewall section in its Yast configeration section)

NAT means you share your connection in a LAN (local area network), with other people. To solve the problem you have to open the 6881 port in your firewall to allow uploads, if this doesn't solve the problem may be you are behind a firewall in the server of your NAT, with this you can't do anything.

have you tried doing this from the firewall configuration tool?? i wish i could give you the details but i don't have suse...

give us the first three parts of your ip address and we'll be able to tell if you're using NAT to connect to the internet...

if so, then your network is probably behind a firewall, and in that case, your local (suse) firewall configuration won't matter... you'd have to be the network adminsitrator to configure your complex's firewall...

okay, that means you're not using nat... your ip is on the internet... so as long as your ISP isn't firewalling you, you should be fine by simply opening the required port on your pc's firewall...

i'm sure you can easily do that in your suse firewall configuration tool...

I think I finally figured out how to do it.
A port number cood be entered as a "service"
And there was an option
"Protect All Running Services means that all network access to services, TCP, and UDP on this machine will be prevented except for those to which you explicitly allowed access in the previous dialog."
I had put the port number as a service on the previous screen.

Unfortunately, this didnt help with the d/l speed. I even shut off the entire firewall for 5 mins, no change.
