I'm not totally sure about this, but I've read where Unbutu linux installs an incompatible version of the Java Virtual Machine (the Gnu Interpreter for Java, or JIM). The solution in that case is to re-install the Java interpreter from scratch.

Obviously, those docs are Unbutu centric, no idea how to do it under Red Hat 9. For what it's worth, I'm getting the same issues under Fedora FC4. There's instructions on how to build a Java RPM on the Fedora Faq (
http://www.fedorafaq.org/#java), but one of the java links is busted, so I can't follow through with them. I'll post a solution when I find it.

In my case, I was able to get things working by installing Java following the docs here:

Not sure how you go about registering alternative applications in Red Hat 9, but at least some of this doc should work.
