avi recorded on LInux appears distorted if played on Windows: what to do?

Hi all,

I recorded an avi file with xvidcap, and when I try to play it on Windows, it appears significantly distorted. Has anyone encountered a problem like this?

Is there a truly portable format that I can record on Linux and play back, or perhaps convert to wmv, on Windows?

Thanks for your kind consideration.

Michel

Data format have nothing to deal with portability... I mean, if you have the right viewer for your encoding format, you will see it withaut any problem, no matter if you record it on a Mac and view it on a Sun station...

The main problem with media players is the codec libraries they use, they have some embedded with their executable, they can use other as plugins...
In my opinion, the best one is VLC because:
-it embed the codec libraries (download one, play all)
-it's multi-OS (you can found it for windows, linux, mac...)
-it's open source
-it's french (OK i'm kidding)

And I forgot something important about VLC: you can capture from V4L2 compliant devices too. More over, it can change your linux box into a multimedia streaming server.

Hello,

I agree about the platform-independence: I just didn't find the appropriate codec on Windows, and assumed that the format prevalent with xvidcap did not convert easily to wmv.

I downloaded VLC, and not only managed to view my file, but managed to convert it to wmv. It's a great piece of software, and as a frequent collaborator of INRIA, I don't have to be sold on the merits of French software.

You have probably this problem: http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/inde...title=B-frames

Windows native players are unable to cope with unpacked frames.

After some work, I managed to compile the code. The instructions for binaries did not work for my version of Suse Linux *i.e. with YaST2).

I would like to use it instead of xvidcap, to capture my screen in real-time. Is it just a player, or is there a recorder that I can obtain?
