AVI Movie Subtitles Work in Linux and Not in Windows

I have an avi format movie that has subtitles as a seperate file in .ssa format. It plays with subtitles just fine on my linux box using mplayer, but I put it on my brother's Windows box and I can't get Windows Media Player or DivX player to pick up the subtitles. I've tried right clicking the screen on DivX player and going to Subtitles but that option cannot be selected, help anyone?

Have you tried the MPlayer Win32 binary? You can download it from the mplayerhq.hu site.
