Avi files in Suse 9.2
 

Hi. Im having trouble playing video files. I can play mpegs but with any avi I only get the sound. I know this has been asked before but I have Installed the latest versions of Xine and I can play encryted dvds fine but any avi file i get the error about no an incorrect codec. I have installed the win32 codec rpm form one of the links on the xine website and that doesnt seem to have solved it and the divx for linux from the divx website didnt help either.
Any suggestions?

Did you install the xvid codec? Many *.avi files are encoded using that, rather than divx.

Thanks I had done that aswell I forgot. in the details for the files Konqerour recognises the codec the video uses and the ones I am having trouble with are a few, div3, div4 and xvid as far as i can tell. the mpeg ones seem fine but i dunno if they are the only ones i would have trouble with.

What versions of everything are you using?

It's very possible that one or more of the following are true:

• your version of KDE/Konqueror does not support these particular codecs fully/well;
  
• your version of SuSE offers an earlier version of the codecs than the ones used to encode the videos you're actually trying to play

Can you play these "problem" files in mPlayer, Xine, Kaffeine, amaroK, or any other dedicated media player you may have available?

maybe try to install libxvidcore .

Maybe the codecs in the rpm are not up to date. You can download the latest ones from mplayers download page and extract them to /usr/lib/win32.

cheers guys. after alot of messing around with the stupid dependencies for mplayer i managed to get it installed and it does play all of those files (both divx and avi) although theres is some playback problems.. tried just with the w32codecs aswell but they didnt help. xine amarok and kaffine did not and still dont play those files tho its wierd.
Now my problem is with the sound. Its really quite and i have to whack the speakers up to hear anything. I have a sound blaster audigy 2 and the kde sounds are fine and normal volume and so is music when i play it but any video i play and also watching the tv the volume is dead quite. I have the volumes set on max but i cant find a way to normalize the volumes from the different sources. is the a hidden volume that you can modify?
