avg8x used all free disk space also core dumps on opensuse 11.1 x86_64


This has happened to me 2 times so far. No free disk space left on /
I don't know what triggered the event

OK, you got the reason: something (maybe avgscand) dumps a 132M core file about every minute. Sure that will fill up the disk.

To make it stop, figure out what's dumping core; you seem to have a suspicion of avg8x. If you don't know, fire up gdb, it will tell you what program created the core dump.

From there you have several options
A) Turn off whatever keeps crashing. (quick)
B) Find out what error causes the program to dump core, and fix it. (Could be much harder)
C) Only avoid core dumps, by limiting their size to zero. If driven from bash, ulimit -c 0. man bash

Disclaimer: I don't know what avg8x is.
