AVG Anti Virus for Linux
 

Does anyone use this on their Linux machines? If so do you like it? I've used the free version on windows before but this is the only Linux anti-virus software I've ever heard of before.

Never used it.

There's also f-prot and clamav.

Ditto pljvaldez. I use clamav (on both Linux and Windows) and have no problems.

I did use AVG at one time on Linux, but since I never found a virus under Linux I don't bother any more.

I tried ClamAV and f-prot with various graphical interfaces as well as some command-line only scanner I can't remember the name of, and found AVG to be easier to use than any of them. It's worth noting that the Linux version of AVG is very different to the Windows version, and has far fewer features.

I have it on my Windows and Linux machines. I only have it on Linux because you can still pass Windows files around and it might be nice to be helpful to be able to scan files from a Linux environment. For example: someone brings me a disk they suspect is infected and are afraid to put it in their own computer, or I'll receive an email with an attached file. I update it about once a month, but update the Windows machines as often as possible. I don't bother with dazuko for real-time background scanning.

My sisters computer once had a virus that I could identify from the Task Manager but Norton couldn't find it but both AVG and AntiVir did. Later I found a chart in an issue of PC Magazine rating antivirus detection rates: AVG, AntiVir and ClamAV were near the top with rates around 92%, Norton and McAfee were in the middle around 85%. Just for kicks and giggles, Windows Live OneCare was at the bottom with less than 70%.

Along with AVG and Clamav, there is also Antivir. They may also be others. www.google.com/linux, and search for 'anti-virus' to see if others turn up.

I've spent a lot of time (hopefully well spent) setting up anti-virus, intrusion detection, etc. I don't have a problem with viruses (yet), but I do pass mails back and forth between my system and several friends using windows. I have anti-virus mostly to protect them from anything I might pass on to them.

AVG has turned out to be USELESS for me. It's not scanning all my files, and it's producing a lot of errors. You can only see one error in this picture, but it is producing many more than just this one.

This is a point I'm interested in. The more Linux users there are, the more incentive there is for businesses to develop software for it. I like to see what's around.

My previous reply disappeared into thin air, I think. I always blame a virus even though it's usually me or wobbly software. Virus checkers give peace of mind, but I wonder whether Linux is really secure enough not to need a virus checker.
