automatic wireless connection

dear friends,

i am using fedora 9 and would like to connect to internet using the wireless connection in my HP laptop. every time i log in to fedora 9 i have to configure my wireless connection to the internet. just recently the bug reporting tool popped up when i tried to edit the network connection by double clicking the network connection icon.

when i edited and activated the wireless connection in the network configureation a dialogue box appeared saying that the IP address i placed is already in use although i changed it several times and made sure that there is no ip address of that sort in our network of few computers.

Thank you for any help on this matter.

God bless

Hi,
Why don't you try wicd?
On my Fedora 10 I also had to do some tweaking to make wireless work, but with wicd things are so simple.
If you didn't install any driver for your wireless chipset then maybe it's a driver issue.Maybe Fedora 9 has a bug in wireless setup application,if so,did you run any updates,it might be fixed by now.
Tell us what you have done so far,or you didn't change default settings?

wicd won't kick

thanks. i installed wicd per instructions. the icon appeared at the task bar. when i double clicked it, it says there is now wireless network found. i tried to install the network by using the network configuration. the same problem occurred as before.

i just don't know why the wireless swithc son't switch on when i open fedora 9 in my laptop. it usually switch on automatically.

thanks again for your assistance.

Ok,please confirm that you've followed this instructions.
What do you mean by "installing the network"?When wicd starts for the first time you only have to configure your encryption key and connect to the network because you've said that it's recognized,so all you have to do is connect and enter your WPA or WEP key if necessary.
Let me quote something;
Quote:

How IP Address Conflicts Happen
Two computers can acquire conflicting IP addresses in any of several ways:

* A system administrator assigns two computers on the LAN the same static IP address

* A system administrator assigns a computer a static IP address within the local network's DHCP range (dynamic IP range), and the same address is automatically assigned by the LAN DHCP server.

* A malfunction in the network's DHCP server allows the same dynamic address to automatically be assigned to multiple computers.

* An Internet Service Provider (ISP) accidentally assigns two customers the same IP address (either statically or dynamically).

* A mobile computer is put into standby / hibernate mode and then awakened later.

Note that other forms of IP conflicts can also occur on a network. For example, one computer may experience an IP address conflict with itself if that computer is configured with multiple network adapters. System administrators may also create IP conflicts by accidentally connecting two ports of a network switch or router to each other.
If you can attach or link the output of the iwconfig and ifconfig or ipconfig if necessary of these few computers that you have that would be helpful.
About wireless switch,if I understand you correctly;you're sayin' that your w. switch is on when you start your PC and when Fedora starts it turns off?Are you sayin' that you don't have to switch w.switch on manually. Please explain this a little better.

internitent wireless network connection

thank you for your detailed info.

in fact when i opened the laptop at home, the wireless connection switch automatically was on though i have no internet connection there. when i brought the laptop to my office yesterday where i used it all time, the wireless switch went on and so with the wicd manager which i just clicked to connect through wireless connection of the internet. i had an internet connection. today, when i opened the laptop, the wireless connection did not switch on though i did it manually by pressing the touch switch just above the keyboard of the hp laptop. i switched off and switched back on the computer twice so that the wireless connection will start automatically, but it won't go. there is a blue blinking light when the wireless connection is on.

i happen to click the application in the task bar the wireless lamp switch fired up. alas there is a wireless connection. immediately i clicked the wicd manager and connected to the internet network. with that internet is live.

God forbid, i just don't know what happened here. be that as it may, there is the internet kicking and you my kind friends.

perhaps my laptop has hibernating wireless switch.

thanks again.

God bless!

intermittent wireless switch

dear friends,

i think there is a problem with the wireless switch configuration. how can the laptop automatically switch on the wireless switch. for as long as the wireless switch is on there is no problem with wicd connecting to the internet.

today my laptop won't switch on its wireless switch.

thank you for help to novice like me.

God bless!

Sorry but I have a problem(again) in trying to understand you. So,if I understand you right;you're sayin' that after your PC was turned off and the wireless switch was in the "on" state you turned your PC on and the wireless switch wasn't "on"?
