automatic revision data comments

How do source files in version control systems (cvs, svn) get automatically updated comments about the revision number at the head of the file?

For instance:

Code:
<?php
// $Id: tracker.module,v 1.76.2.2 2004/04/12 08:31:30 dries Exp $
