Automated Tasks

My friend told me it is necessary that I automate the task of backing up and archiving logs. Why is this necessary? And how beneficial is it to have automated tasks?

I wouldn't say its necessary but its important to automate some tasks just in case you forget to do it. Also automating tasks saves you time and effort because the tasks can be done whilst you are doing something else.

And if you are running a server, and you get hacked someway and the cracker gets root access, he may delete logs. Then you cant see where he came in. But if you have backups, you may see how he get in.
