Automated download sorting by filetype

I use Mozilla Firefox with the included download manager. I am wondering if there is a way to have the download manager (another manager that could work in conjunction with Firefox), to sort downloads automatically into verious directories based on their filetype. I want to send PDFs to one place, tarballs to another, etc. without having to constantly select which directory they should be placed in.

When you start to download a file in firefox, a dialog pops up with possible actions ... you can edit those actions and then check "always do this with this file type". (I think you need to adjust the download preferences so it asks you where to download to each time as well)
