Question Auto-running Apps from USB

In certain cases when USB drives come with software, one can plug these into their Windows desktops and it automatically starts "autoruns" certain apps.

Can the same functionality be made available/achieved under linux? i.e. I would like to have certain presentations loaded onto the USB drive, and upon plugging the drive into my linux desktop, these presentation(s) would start playing. These could be flash or java based presentations?

Any guidance on how to achieve this functionality would be appreciated.

On Windows I assume it's as simple as somebody made a "rule" that whenever external media is connected ("mounted"), it is searched for an executable file -- maybe called Autorun -- and if one is found, it is either executed right away, or the user is asked whether that should be done or not, depending on the configuration. So it's like an extra step done after the device is connected and it's contents are available, a simple search for an executable file.

I guess it can be done on Linux (at least KDE automatically asks what you'd like to do -- open directory, view images, listen to music, ... -- when you mount a cd, media player or something), but the actual work depends on your desktop I guess.
