Auto login in the text mode

Hi
I know usually auto login with root in linux quite doesn't make sense, but here is a reason.
I am doing some experiments with x86 simulators and I want to automate it with scripts.

How I can automatically login with root account in the text mode?
I mean without using xdm, gdm, kdm like any x windows managers in run level 2.
I am also wondering how it would be able to run some scripts as soon as auto login.

I guess there should be only one terminal(getty) and it will be needed to change or
setup login or getty.
Can I ask how I can do this with login also without login?

Thanks

Best regards,
JHR

Yes I would like to know the answer to this. Yes I know all about the security issues. I am using Centos on a PC104 board. This board comes with special DIO libraries and no matter what i do with file permissions and such I cannot get it to run under any other user other than root. We also need to autologin to an xwindow and then auto run our program that uses the DIO Library. So I am very curious how to autologin as root and be done with this head ache. Thanks

Auto login in the text mode

Assuming you're using Gnome Just go to the System Settings menu and select Login Screen. In the Window that appears find the area that says Automatic Login and check the automatically login this user and select the user in the drop-down list.

http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue72/chung.html

I found this site to be very useful in setting up autologin to init 1 or init 3 .
The example they give is for a normal user but it works for root also. ( gasp! )
One thing I had to do was chmod the permissions for other. Something like this...
chmod 755 autologinfred

Also, I changed the line to use agetty for my CentOS box.
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -n -l /usr/local/sbin/autologinfred 38400 tty1
