audio problem

i've a strange problem... i've an ac97 card that works fine both with oss and alsa, but i've to run a 2.4.18 kernel because of a driver (drivers of my modem are no more free, so the last version of the free drivers are for that kernel), so i installed debian and it put by default kernel 2.4.25 with oss, where the sound work fine, so i installed the 2.4.18 kernel, but here, sound doesn't work, if i click on 'play' of xmms it just remain as before, no seconds going, no signs of a playing and no errors, it's like i click on a functionless button, same problem with all other application, can't make the sound go... someone can help me?
