Exclamation Audio Glitches with Linux 3.8.0-34 Low Latency 64-bit kernel on Linux Mint 15.

Hi,

I installed the Low Latency kernel using the this command:

Code:
apt-get install linux-lowlatency linux-headers-lowlatency
It boots into the KDE desktop properly, but the beginning of the KDE startup sound quickly loops a few times, then stops. After this, no more audio can be heard from any applications. The sound works fine after booting back into the generic 3.8.0-34 kernel.

I added my user to the audio group, and also added the following to /etc/security/limits.conf:

Code:
@audio - rtprio 95
@audio - memlock 512000
@audio - nice -19
I used the speaker-test -twav -c2 command but there is also no sound from there.

Thanks.

this is a big and tricky undertaking and you shouldn't be discouraged if it doesn't work straight ootb.

iirc, kde uses it's own audio architecture frontend (phonon?), which only adds to the general hiccup.

this setup begs the question what you are trying to achieve (some audio studio setup?) and if kde is the right companion for that.

there's some dedicated linux audio distros, as well as forums. you should check with them, but you should also get aquainted with linux sound architecture and how the real-time kernel ties into all that. installing ubuntu studio would be the easiest solution i guess.

hi,

I'm installing the low latency kernel mainly for the desktop and gaming performance boost.

Would it help if I installed and switched to OSS?

It will also depend on your actual hardware, especially RAM, swap, video GPU, CPU(s)

how much junk you have running

what desktop you chose
EEK ----KDE is the most resource hungry Desktop environment

There are lots of smaller resource hungry window managers that do a fine job with graphics

Speaking of graphics, you may know that open source has tended to mean NOT 3d support.
altho that is starting to change.

IMHO nvidia closed src driver is still better than open source.

2) You could try installing a kernel tweaked for gaming?

good luck

separate post for separate theme

IMHO pulseaudio, normally a front end to alsa
---offers more complex configurations so more flexibility sound wise

It depends on whether you have a laptop (say) using a sound stereo at home but analog on the road.

OSS is simple but ahh it can be difficult to get some configs the way you want due to how its supported
-----IMHO it is ideal for those with older sound devices

Can you recommend any desktops that have a balance between eye candy and performance? I don't like the new Gnome 3, and I haven't had much luck with E17 (always segfaulting).

if crudely or cruelly we say bloatware/eye candy is
kde, gnome (and its variants)

then next try might be xfce

but as you mention eye candy----- enlightenment is designed for it
----bodhi is a dedicated E distro you could have a look at that?
