Audacity: using Truncate Silence

In Audacity, does anyone else get unpredictable results with the Truncate Silence tool? It behaves unpredictably for me in two ways: it sometimes fails to truncate the entire length of silence even after I adjust the settings; and more oddly, it can run at varying speeds despite the lengths of silence being similar. I've seen it finish nearly instantaneously at times and much slower at others. It's more a curiosity than a problem.

Have you changed the default setting? Is the maximum silence is 1000 ms (1 sec)?
If a file has more than 1 sec silence, it removes it.
If you generate a silence of 5 seconds and add in any file (anywhere), now when you truncate the silence, it removes the 5 sec silence.
